Academy Award® winners Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) tear up the screen in this action-packed thriller. Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) is lured back to his family estate to investigate the savage murder of his brother by a bloodthirsty beast. There, Talbot must confront his childhood demons, his estranged father (Hopkins), his brother’s grieving fiancée (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada) and a suspicious Scotland Yard Inspector (Hugo Weaving, The Matrix Trilogy). When Talbot is bitten by the creature, he becomes eternally cursed and soon discovers a fate far worse than death.
“Aftershock” (or “Aftershocks”, depending on the translation) is the first of three planned IMAX films in China, produced by Huayi Bros. studio. It has brought in 532 million yuan ($78.6 million) since its 22 July 2010 release, making it the highest grossing domestic film in China. It’s a drama and was made with less than $25 million.
The film takes place in the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan (China) earthquake, focusing on a mother’s tragic decision to rescue one of her twins at the expense of the other.
Tangshan, 1976. Two seven-year-old twin children are buried under the rubble of the devastating earthquake. The rescue team explains to their mother, Li Yuanni, that freeing either child will almost certainly result in the death of the other. Forced to make the most difficult decision of her life, she finally chooses to save her son Fang Da, the male twin.
New York City Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) is a forensic accountant who is more interested in paperwork than fieldwork. Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) has been stuck working with Gamble since an embarrassing shooting. Gamble and Hoitz both admire top cops Danson and Manzetti (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson, but when their chance to show their stuff arises, things go wrong.
